We met Sam's class at the beach last week for a field trip. Scuba divers brought up some great things for the kids to explore; sea stars, hermit crabs, sea cucumbers and an assortment of shellfish. It was a great outing. Matthew held a sea cucumber, he was fascinated by all the little creatures. This sea cucumber issues quite a strange defense mechanism. The pictures may need a little explaining...they basically poop out all of their insides when threatened, only we had no idea what was happening to this thing. It emptied itself completely and was this flat, deflated little creature who of course was put back into the water. We all thought it was dead, but it was explained to us that they regenerate all of their organs. As Sam's preschool teacher explained it, "God sure got creative with some of his creatures".
